What Is Acupuncture?

Although acupuncture is practiced worldwide, many people have a limited understanding of what it is and how it works. Although there is a range of different approaches to acupuncture, the core concepts of acupuncture are the same across the globe. Acupuncture is a type of alternative medicine. It’s considered to be a complementary medicine, which means that it’s intended to be used alongside standard medical treatment.

Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles across various regions of the body. Needles are inserted at varying depths depending on the type of treatment. The needles typically remain on the skin for a short period of time before they are removed. While in the body, the needles can stimulate tissue, nerves, and muscles. Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, nausea, and stress.

Where Did It Come From?

Acupuncture originated in ancient China. Although the exact dates of its origins are unknown, ancient acupuncture needles can be traced back to 100 BC. Acupuncture was also spoken of in records of history from around that time, where it is treated as an established practice.

Although acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of traditional Chinese medicine, it has grown and evolved over time. Ancient acupuncture needles were quite thick, which sometimes caused skin damage. During the first century A.D., acupuncture books began to be published, and acupuncturists began to revise their practices.

As with traditional medicine, the effectiveness of acupuncture has improved over time. Practitioners have worked to test and refine treatments, and numerous organizations have been created to research acupuncture. The success of this research helped to make acupuncture popular worldwide.

What Are The Benefits of Acupuncture?

Currently, the World Health Organization has found acupuncture to be effective at treating 28 different kinds of conditions. These include migraines, nausea, chronic pain, and dry mouth. Even if a research hasn’t been done into acupuncture treatments for a certain type of condition, it’s possible that it might have therapeutic benefits.

One of the best things about acupuncture is that it’s extremely safe and has few to no side effects. People often use acupuncture alongside other types of medication. It’s also commonly used by people receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment. This allows people to take less medication and mitigate many of the negative side effects of their treatment.

Acupuncture has also been found to be very effective for people who don’t respond well to pain medications. Research has suggested that acupuncture can improve the body’s natural ability to deal with pain, which means that it can work when painkillers don’t.

Unlike some other forms of alternative medicine, acupuncture has gained increased respect from medical professionals. Numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness, and it has been shown to be a potent treatment for an array of difficult-to-treat conditions.
